While it has been a few years since I found it necessary to take a self imposed respite from my advocacy work, that does not mean that I have not continued to witness the continuing horrors inflicted upon the innocent. Each and every account, each and every horrific graphic image is permanently etched into my psyche and adds to the unhealed scars that remain hidden, adding to the dark cloud that covers my very soul and which has essentially destroyed what little faith in mankind I had left.
First a question. Do any of you still feel the knots of frustration and anger when you, as well, continue to witness the many injustices that we are bombarded with daily? Be it the autrocities inflicted upon the human species or the animal species? If you do not, then stop reading this post.
We are all aware of the ramifications and negative results of ‘racial profiling’. Judging all by the actions of others, based upon their colour and beliefs. Many likely support that notion, but many do not. This bias is at best, motivated by fear and prejudice, and many around the world believe it to be totally unacceptable.
There is another type of profiling that is currently going on in today’s fearful society, resulting in the destruction of innocent lives and which rips at the heart of loving families.
Currently Montreal, Quebec, Canada plans to use “Canine Profiling as their bandaid solution to a problem which is not a dog problem, it is in fact a human problem! This planned Canine Profiling is biased and prejudicial, based upon fear and ignorance (at least in this writers opinion).
Given that the Animal Legal Defense Fund lists Quebec in the Bottom Tier for Animal Protection Laws, as it has for over a decade, it comes as no surprise that the animals in this province continue to be subjugated. A province well known for it’s continuing puppy mills and apathy.
For those of us who remember LENNOX and BRINDIE, for those of us that remember the Whistler Massacre, The Howl Heard around the World, we also remember the sheer anger, our gut knotted in disbelief and total frustration. If you are like I am, each incident, inflicts upon you a striking blow. It is not just the innocent life that has been taken, we lose part of ourselves as well.
Canine Profiling does not focus on the real issue. Canine Profiling is biased, prejudicial and based upon the ignorance and fear which is a direct result of the mistreatment, uneducated handling and training of targeted breeds. It is born from the questionable personal agendas and the irresponsibility of far too many “humans” who own targeted breeds.
I am asking all of you who continue to advocate and fight for the lives of the innocent, to join us in our fight against “Canine Profiling”. Please help this campaign go viral by sharing.
Canada continues to import fur products from China!!!!!
Demand that Prime Minister Harper bans and ends these imports instead of enabling this horrific cruelty.
How could anyone be proud to show off fur cuffs, fur boot trim and fur accessories imported from China when these animals suffer so horrendously.
There has been much by way of emailing between parties with reference to the controversial No Kill Movement, and in addressing the issues and conversation that ensued, I have received permission from Ms. West to copy and paste her response in one of her communiques. My own comments are made first and I agree wholeheartedly with Ms. West.
Over population is definitely NOT and animal problem. It is in fact a HUMAN problem period! Every single day, in every single town, city and province countless kittens and puppies are born and cats and dogs are either turned into shelters, are found abandoned and dumped. Why, because educating the masses as well try to do, stressing the need for spay/neuter is being totally ignored by the ignorant, the money hungry and the irresponsible pet owners not only in Canada but elsewhere throughout the US and every country on the Globe. It is a HUMAN problem. We see it everyday, and we clean up the mess and horror left behind.
As far as the laws governing companion animals in this country, we all know how archaic and antiquated these laws are, yet each time a new Bill is brought before the House to improve the legislation and declassify animals as mere property, it is voted down by the current government in power. Further, shelter funding for the most part is not subsidized by provincial or federal funding and often depends solely upon donations. What municipally owned shelters there are, are dictated to by the municipal bureaucrats who dictate!!
Over burdened shelters, and especially No-Kill Shelters trying so desperately to find forever homes for those in need, unlicensed back yard breeders, the human failures of spaying and neutering companion animals, the total lack of responsible pet owners and the failure of municipal, provincial and federal government to properly address the issues of inadequate veterinary services in many areas across Canada, the Federal Legislation, the lack of very real animal protection By-Laws within our communities, municipalities and not having enough qualified, fully educated Animal Cruelty Investigators within each SPCA, town, city, municipality and province/territory is also part of the problem.
We need the powers of Seizure to save distressed animals held in the confines of ongoing neglect, disregard and failures to provide the necessities of life. Here in Canada, we need the powers that are given to SPCA’s within the US. Here instead we must depend upon the local police forces for seizure and quite honestly folks they have enough on their hands and distressed and abused animals are the last of their concerns.
Major movements within this country and elsewhere, as Sarah has pointed out, must have one focus to be effective Any problem regarding animal welfare is NOT a single faceted one The No Kill Solution is taking the shelters to task. This is one of the problems we have with bad shelter management, lack of cooperation with rescues, not socializing dogs and the list goes on!
We have seen the scandals surrounding the OSPCA, my God my computer files are enormous on that particular issue alone. Then you take into account the Whistler case, that massive slaughter was unnecessary and fueled only by greed and a failure to effectively monitor such operations. The subsequent investigation into the slaughter was too little too late, and the outcome of the judgement issued by the Courts for this mass murder was merely a slap on the wrist.
WE must, support each other. WE must be united period. WE must not criticize or judge that which is being done by any one group or organization in their fight to end cruelty to animals in this country or anywhere else period. Dissention among the troops proves only to make the army very shaky and ineffective. While one has the right to disagree, and I will defend that right, we all have one common goal and purpose..to save animals. Since the Federal Government shows total disrespect and total disregard, often branding many of us as ‘terrorists’ if we speak out against the lack of very real Animal Protection, cutting off charitable status to organizations that openly oppose current ridiculous antiquated legislation and policies..we have only each other from which to draw strength and resources.
Ms. West writes:
Areas of Focus That must be Addressed Regarding Pet Overpopulation and Animal Cruelty
If we have groups and movements taking on any of these’ issues of this multi-faceted program…. it is a good thing! No one group can do it all and we cannot criticize each other if any one of us feel that something is fundamentally wrong with a specific group then don’t work with them Keep doing what you are doing, but I feel other than that we must work together as Bonnie says.
Think about this list above. This is a huge problem almost beyond comprehension but we can neither be “ overwhelmed” or critical. All efforts are helping and the No Kill movement may be doing some things you don’t like but the fact that Nathan Winograd has started this is a good thing. Many animals lives have been saved by his movement and that is a good thing regardless. I for one glad am he is on the ground fighting back with the No Kill Movement
All of us have to pick one focus and working on creating a dove- tail relationships with others who have a different mandate and focus! It is out of “ combined” efforts that will and do make a difference for all the animals we care for so deeply.
We can’t change other countries but we can all come together to do what we can for Canada and her animals and creatures, wild, marine, stray ,farm and companion.

Call me CRAZY, call me TOO SENSITIVE. Call me AN ACTIVIST. Call me AN ADVOCATE…..Call me ANGRY, FRUSTRATED, DISGUSTED, APPALLED, FED UP, DISCOURAGED!!!
Call me whatever you like, but NEVER call me APATHETIC. Never call me COMPLACENT.
Every single day, 24 hours a day, in the news there is something about the horrors inflicted on animals somewhere. In our towns, our cities, our neighborhoods and across the globe. Every day, 24 hours a day there is something about the destruction of habitat, our fresh waterways, our ozone layer, our overall environment. Perfect example is the decision of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, despite the outcries of protest, to destroy the home of Lucky and Lily, the Lindsay Pond Beavers. In response to the emails his offices received, a rather canned response was issued, I know I got the identical response others have received.
In the news every day, 24 hours a day, there are published accounts of man-kinds inhumanity against our own species. Wars plague our planet, the fight for freedom and for democracy continues. Wars rage against tyranny. There are wars evolving around religion, wars of politics, war for land, for resources, the subjugation of human rights and freedoms. Wars are big business, wars create jobs and make money for the politicians and the vast innumerable companies that manufacture arms of destruction. Wars make humans disposable items, just as humans have made animals disposable, made our waterways, our lands disposable.
There are wars in our schools, wars in our neighborhoods, continued child abuse, spousal abuse, domestic violence is on the rise. Mutilators of animals turned mutilators of people. Wars between drug lords, wars among street gangs, wars with our neighbors, wars in every single aspect of our lives.
The biggest war is our personal war to survive period., to pay our bills, to support and feed our families and to keep a roof over our heads, to cover medical costs and to just get through each day as best we can.
Unfortunately far too many do not, far too many just say to hell with it, suicides are on the rise, addictions are on the rise, mental illness is on the rise, murder/suicides are on the rise. People are snapping, losing it, you see it every day in the newscasts.
Is it me or has all of mankind inhabiting this beautiful planet gone absolutely mad??
From the continuing Middle East crisis, that has not changed over the centuries, nor will it ever; the Euro catastrophe; the issues here at home and pretty much everywhere: the rising cost of living, the rising unemployment, the rising interest rates, the famine and crop failures coupled with increasing droughts in some countries, the increased natural disasters across the globe, the negative health effects suffered by First Nations and others due to Canada’s dirty oil and planned expansion in Alberta…the millions of taxpayer dollars ill spent by our politicians in their continuing bid to ensure Canada’s sealing industry continues, the unwanted pipelines that pose risk to our environment, wildlife and communities are pushed through; the continued Canadian importation of US horses for slaughter, the continued horrific slaughter of Canadian horses, the devastating cruelty in Factory Farms and the horrific suffering of these animals in fires due to the lack of proper safeguards. The violation of human rights here at home and around the globe.
Add to the above the lack of affordable housing, cuts to social programs, the lack of proper health care in Northern communities…increased taxes, hungry children across our land…and MOST of all the deaf ears of politicians to the voices of the people….MY GOD, where will it all end???
Here in Canada, Harper has gutted Environmental Protection despite the loud voices of protest across this country. Revenue Canada is now charged with the responsibility to pull Charitable Status from any organization that speaks out against the policies of Harper’s Government.
Here in Canada, unless one is independently wealthy or has a substantial nest egg, Canadians are now being forced to retire at age 67 rather than at 65. Is this a ploy to ensure that Canada Pension will remain in the coffers of government….that hopefully many of us will be dead before we are able to collect the benefits which we have paid into all of our working careers??
Would it not be nice if our politicians stopped wasting our tax dollars on propaganda campaigns hoping to lull us into a false sense of security as well as attempting to lift EU bans that are in place on Sealing products or attempts to convince countries outside of Canada to by dirty oil? Or to fulfill personal agendas? Or to waste our money on all the fixings for the last G Summit held in Toronto? Or to launch insulting campaigns against each other during the election process? Count the many ways your tax dollars are wasted…can anyone count that high?
Wow, then there would be money for all our Pensions, all of our health care needs and social programs.
We would not have needed the “Black out. Speak Out” campaign!! that so many participated in across our country.
Oops, did I say that…am I provoking thought…oops again.
Throughout human history, we have an extremely dismal past. If anything the centuries clearly show that despite our so-called technical advances, our medical miracles discovered, we have failed miserably as an overall species to live in harmony with each other and the world around us.
Everything we have ever come in contact with, including each other, our environment, our wildlife, every living organism on this planet, has been manipulated, controlled and destroyed due to a superiority complex infused with ego, greed and a self centered pathology.
My favorite phrase (put more politely) is that if one does not like what I have to say, does not wish to know the truth, then one can walk away. Calling it as I see it, and voicing my personal opinion (as everyone has the right to do) often creates a great deal of controversy, at times negative, however it also provokes thought.
All of us are on the brink, that very fine thin line and unless there is extremely positive action to reverse the centuries of accumulated damage to human thinking, the human misconceptions and current way of life, society today across the globe will go the way of the Aztec, the Mayan, the Roman Empire, and the Egyptian Empire just to name a few. All great civilizations in their own right, that by their own actions, produced their decline and extinction.
I am not a harbinger of doom…..I see the reality…I do not have my head stuck in the sand…I shout from the rooftops, I reach out, try to educate as best I can.
Each and every one of us, has within us an untapped strength and the ability to make positive change in any area and or issue that we now face on a global scale. Each and every one of us has the Free Will to do so, to take a Positive Stand, to Reach Out, to Shout Loudly not only through our words but also our Actions.
What are you prepared to do? Are you prepared to join those of us who continue to fight the good fight against unfair odds? If so I applaud you, if so I am grateful to you!
My dearest mother and sole living relative asked me what I wanted for my coming birthday…my answer..to just once listen to the radio, or watch TV news broadcasts, or pick up a newspaper where there were very real Happy Stories instead of the continued barrage of doom and gloom.
Imagine a news broadcast that featured only good things? Is that at all even possible?
Here is one bad story with what is hoped will be a happy ending for one severely injured cat.

Well done and our heartfelt thank you so much for what you and Angels for Animals are doing? We fully support you with regards to banning horse slaughter in Canada .The bill board regarding Canadian horse slaughter is wonderful and so very much needed. Thank you so much Angels for Animals.
It’s not just that slaughter houses don’t have glass walls that keep the public unaware of this obscene industry. …it the simple fact that the meat slaughter industry has far more money than those of us attempting to educate the public about this barbaric cruelty..
However we are getting smarter creating awareness for the public about this cruelty by using social media. This is a tool that nether the government or the food animal slaughter industry would ever use because it’s transparent and immediate! This alone with undercover investigation videos from CFETFA Canadians For The Ethical Treatment of Food Animals is make a small dent in this invisible cruelty
CFAWR’s position is that we as Canadian citizens have a right to know HOW our food is made, WHAT is in it and WHERE it comes from. It is the meat industry that has anesthetized the public from day one by calling baby cows “VEAL” sheep “MUTTON” cows “BEEF”. Deer “VENISON ect .If they could find a name for horses that worked… I am sure they would market that to us also.
This and building food animal slaughter houses well away from the public’s eye have made this “invisible” cruelty so far away from public scrutiny. However this is changing!
I have sent the below from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as this issue may it may come in parliament, up re your bill. My question is…horses are not food animals and why is the CFIA Director involved with this? Drugs alone are not the key issue here as I know you are aware. It is the obscene and brutal cruelty in horse slaughtering that is!
Even though our federal animal welfare protection welfare legislation is outdated and almost redundant… I know that the horse slaughter industry is in violation of this and the regulations set down by the government’s food inspection agency
CFAWR | Current Legislation ( Please check out our link ?) You will find it very informative and it may be useful for you with regards to your banning horse slaughter bill)
You +1′d this publicly. Undo
Richard Ryder writes that the first known legislation against animal cruelty in the English-speaking world was passed in Ireland in 1635. It prohibited pulling wool…
CFAWR’S point is WHY should we have our tax dollars used by the Canadian government put controls in place for food animals we don’t eat and to support a few horse slaughter plants… a slaughter we don’t want and for European markets? How is this helping the Canadian economy?
When you connect the dots and look closely, the Canadian food inspection agency via Dr Arsenault is supporting the business ventures of 3 or 4 horse slaughter businessmen and with our tax dollars! This is totally unacceptable
I believe there are only a handful of places that serve horse meat in Canada and I think they are all in Quebec? So my point to the government is …how much are you spending on this to support an overseas food industry and a handful of restaurants for FOOD animals we don’t eat and an animal slaughter Canadians don’t want ?
Political objectives are often met and legislation passed, because no one takes time to connect the dots and look at the domino effects of political decisions and /or consider public input. Part of CFAWR’S role and one in which we have made a commitment to in helping the government move forward on strengthening animal cruelty legislation,is by connecting the dots in various issues and laying out a map
Last but certainly not least it might be advantageous to point out to the opposition of your bill that this could be a first opportunity for the Canadian government to take some action on their “ commitment in principle” to the UDAW Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. This would go down very well for Canadians and give Prime Minister Harper some credibility back !

More and more, public awareness of the outrageous, unforgivable treatment inflicted on the lives of innocent animals is proving to be a driving force for positive action.
One year ago today, a VIGIL, protesting the needless murder of 102 unlucky shelter animals held at the Newmarket, Ontario shelter was launched. Below are just a few of the many pictures taken during the 2011 VIGIL.
Today, May 11, 2012 marks the Second Anniversary and once again, dedicated, caring people are gathering to honor these lost lives taken due to indifference and apparent complacency on the part of the caregivers to which these precious lives were entrusted.
The fact that today’s MEMORIAL VIGIL is even taking place is evidence in itself, that SOMETHING HAS GOT TO CHANGE IN ONTARIO. This incident SHOULD NEVER have happened in the first place!!!!!
In March 2009 a great deal of Hype was publicized about Ontario enacting the Strongest Animal Protection Law in Canada. Congratulations to Ontario!!
Note the sarcasm here!!!!
McGuinty Government Modernizes Animal Cruelty Laws
“Today is an historic day for our province when it comes to animal protection. Ontario has passed legislation that will give us the strongest animal protection laws in Canada, and bring more abusers to justice.”
– Rick Bartolucci
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Service
Clearly obvious by the scandal and subsequent Inquiry launched by Mr. Klees resulting in the report finally being published: http://giftofloki.wordpress.com/2011/06/04/news-from-ontario-ospca-full-report-released-finally/
Excerpt: “The report said a couple of things which made my blood boil, one of them being 57 animals euthanized. Well we all know that is not true. From the very beginning in their attempt to make themselves look transparent to the public they itemized exactly where the 102 animals were, how many were in foster care and those that went to alternate clinics. So how do they get off saying there were only 57. Please do not blame the investigators for that.”
A great deal must be done to improve the Ontario situation. Thus far it is most questionable as to whether anything at all POSITIVE has been done to protect the lives of innocent animals in Ontario, whose sole crime was to be born.
Many animals have AND CONTINUE TO FALL VICTIM to irresponsible and uncaring owners that allow continued breeding, failing to spay and neuter their pet, allowing them to roam freely and THUS contribute to an ever expanding population of unwanted and discarded animals.
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!
Much gratitude is due to ALL those who continue to fight, in Ontario, the injustices inflicted upon animals in Ontario. Gratitude must be given to those who REMEMBER and who continually REMIND us that WE are all RESPONSIBLE. Reminding us too, that each and every one of us CAN DO something POSITIVE, to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!! Special thanks to you for allowing me to use these pictures.
“Miracle of Life”
Come quick”, their mother said, “The time is getting near”;
She feels that when the kittens come the children should be here.
She told them that a big orange Tom took “Kitty” as his wife,
“It’s wonderful, a gift from God, the miracle of life”.
At half a year young “Kitty” feels too painful and too scared,
To appreciate six miracles, blind-eyed and yellow haired.
But she knows these lives depend on her and nature tells her how,
And as she cleans them, children ask “Mom, can we go now?”
But now and then, for six more weeks the children visit her,
To play with six new magic toys, made of life and fur.
The six weeks pass, the newness gone and new homes yet unfound,
Mom bundles up six miracles and takes them to the pound,
Where lovingly, with gentle hands and no tears left to cry,
The shelter workers kiss them once and take them off to die.
And “Momma Kitty”, now she’s called, mourns her loss and then,
She’s put outside, and of course, she’s pregnant once again.
Dad tells “Kitty” STOP THIS NOW or you won’t live here long!,
But deep inside of Momma Cat, this time something’s wrong.
Too young, too small, too often bred now nature’s gone awry,
Momma Kitty feels it too and she crawls off to die.
She too is freed from this cruel world, and from her time of strife.
How harsh the truth, how high the price, this “Miracle of Life”
